The idea of the Glass Heap Challenge, as conceived of by Matt Durran, is to challenge the creativity of artists, designers and glass protagonists to find and demonstrate unique, creative and inspiring works which show ways to utilize stockpiled waste glass. This not only brings a greater level of awareness to the potential of upcycling waste glass but also provokes discussion on how to make better use of waste material in general.
The Glass Heap Challenge does not follow an established and elaborate plan, it is simple, inclusive and embraces the element of uncertainty. No one knows ahead of time what sort of raw materials will be on hand, often what type of space will be available, what kind of equipment or technical assistance will be on site, and indeed, as some of the teams are made up of people who have never met each other, who they will be working with. This uncertainty inspires the participants to meet the Challenge with a much greater level of energy and excitement than a more structured approach would give.
The resulting finished pieces create a legacy of art works, objects and products to inspire and add value to future markets.
The Glass Heap Challenge International Masterclasses is part of the program, How Glass Can Change the World 2014-2015

SYMPOSIUM INTERNATIONAL MASTERCLASSES THE GLASS HEAP CHALLENGE NL 2014

								20 October 2014, 10.00-18.00 hours
Venue: Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven
Auditorium

The aim of the symposium is to introduce participants of the Glass Heap Challenge 2014, its Masterclasses and other visitors, to the use, reuse and upcycling of glass.
The symposium is the launching platform for the introduction to the issue of glass waste. We believe it is our shared responsibility to find solutions and to steer the future direction of glass making towards the evolution and development of this potential market. Through the innovative art of recycling and upcycling, we wish to encourage people in the fields of art, design, architecture, industry and science to develop their current practices into new, clean and financially viable areas.

Target groups are the general public, artists and designers, students, Waste Management Companies, Glass Industry, Emerging Markets, Social Design Organisations, Government and Administration and Digital Partners.

The Glass heap Challenge organisation will work during the Dutch Design Weeks 2014 in Eindhoven and will welcome 28 participants made up of 4 teams as well as online participants. During the week, we will host on site and online evening discussions/talks/lectures. Prizes will be awarded to the best on site and online.
The challenge is to find a range of both high-tech and low-tech solutions to the problems of glass disposal and to encourage reused material and circular industries. In order to do so, we need to engage worldwide with science, industry and communities.
The idea of the Glass Heap Challenge, as conceived of by Matt Durran, is to challenge the creativity of artists, designers and glass protagonists to find and demonstrate unique, creative and inspiring works which show ways to utilize stockpiled waste glass. This not only brings a greater level of awareness to --the potential of upcycling waste glass but also provokes discussion on how to make better use of waste material in general.
