SUMMERSCHOOL BLACK COUNTRY VOYAGES

Black Country Voyages is an art project for local young people, aged 15-19 years old, involving members of the Ikon Youth Programme (IYP)Ikon is a leading contemporary art museum in Birmingham.

Midlands artists Juneau Projects are leading Black Country Voyages in 2014, and will curate a programme of events, performances and exhibitions, related to and inspired by the heritage of the Black Country. This interactive project will see Juneau Projects travel along local canals with the IYP, engaging local audiences through workshops, live performances and exhibitions. Throughout the journey they will transform the interior and exterior of the boat into a hand-painted archive of people's ideas.

Black Country Voyages is in partnership with many local arts, heritage and educational organisations including Glass House College Stourbridge and Red House Glass Cone in Stourbridge. The area has a history of glasswork dating back to the 1690s where several glass factories and craftsman worked there. Today the tradition of glass trade to the area is kept alive by organisations like Glasshouse College and The Red House Glass Cone.

On Friday 22 August Black Country Voyages tours to Stourbridge and hosts a week-long summer school for local young people. An afternoon of family-friendly workshops will take place where visitors can make their own fused glass trinkets, work with Juneau Projects and visit the canal boat.

Glasshouse College supports day and residential students aged 16 to 24 through practical skills and therapeutic education, which offers a clear pathway for delivering progression and sustainable outcomes. The Red House Glass Cone houses a collective of artist and designer makers called 'Made @ the Cone.'
