RENÉ LALIQUE: ENCHANTED BY GLASS

By Kelley Jo Elliott, with foreword by Karol Wight and contributions by Elizabeth Everton and Tina Oldknow

René Lalique, a master artist and designer of early 20th-century France, initially achieved fame for his jewellery creations, which were widely admired and collected. He began experimenting with glass in the 1890s and was so captivated by the material that he spent the rest of his career working with it exclusively. The glass objects that he designed, such as vases, ashtrays, tableware, and other household accessories, are now considered iconic representations of the art nouveau and art deco movements.

This publication, which accompanies the Museum’s current exhibition by the same name (17/5/2014-4/1/2015, read the article>), traces Lalique's distinguished career. Hundreds of colour photographs, including many dramatic, full-page images, spotlight individual pieces of glass and original wax and plaster models selected from the extensive collection of The Corning Museum of Glass. The book also draws on the Museum's wealth of archival material on Lalique, including design drawings and photographs. This strikingly beautiful and informative volume is a testament to the singular allure of his enchanting glass.

The book on René Lalique: Enchanted by Glass is enchanted itself by the excellent photos and layout. The book starts with Lalique’s quote: “Glass is a wonderful substance. Everything makes it an incomparable plastic medium in the hands of an ingenious artist, offering his imagination and talent almost limitless scope for discovery”. The text is superb to read: informative on the life of Lalique, clear to read, well-illustrated with historical material. Page-sized photos of objects, designs, drawings and models invite the reader to fully understand the original spirit of the entrepreneur and artist who understood his time and clients so well. The text pages on The Third Republic in glass sketch the roaring years, the position of women, the modern styles, one-off pieces and mass production, paving the road for artists, architects and designers who would follow later.
A book all should read to understand the development in glass art.
