GRADUATES OF THE CERAMIC AND GLASS DEPARTMENT OF THE SINT-LUCAS INSTITUTE, GHENT 2014

Dirk Schrijvers

In 2014, Jeroen Heerwegh and Merlijn van der Hoeven obtain their master degree at the Department Ceramics and Glass of the Sint-Lucas Institute, Ghent. This is the only institution in Belgium where education of both ceramics and glass is combined, leading to a unique crossover of both disciplines.
Under supervision of Anne Ausloos, the students learn by an experience-guided method to work with both materials in a creative process. Sabine Deroo is responsible of teaching ceramics and cold and warm glass working techniques are given by Eric Pipien.
The specific qualities of both materials are explored in different projects with experimentation of new techniques. Also, the personal artistic development in relation with the art world is stimulated.
The program is supplemented by guest teachers from Belgium or other regions and in 2014, Mirco Denicoló (IT), Deborah Czeresko (USA), Marc Higgin and Douglas White (UK) and Sylvie Vandenhoucke (B) have given workshops.

Jeroen Heerwegh
Jeroen Heerwegh (°1992) was trained in applied arts before starting at the Ceramic and Glass department. He was fascinated by glass because of the changeability of the material with the light.

“Glass changes when it is lighted by natural or artificial light. The making process is a source of inspiration: the forming of the melted glass according to your thoughts, the development of a formless material to a strong form, the play of transparency and colors, the shining and frosted surface, the different possibilities of the material and the challenge to obtain a certain result are factors that make that I love this material. ”

His graduation work is based on his search for harmonic forms. These forms should be able to stand-alone and radiate a certain strength, which attracts the observer. The use of neutral colors as black and white on the surface make that the object looks familiar. However, the interior of the object is brightly colored and this should increase the interest of the observer to study and observe the object.
“ The quest for specific forms is the base of my work, a harmonic play of different pieces and forms. By placing opposing forms together, they acquire a relationship among them which creates a tension between the pieces. The color plays an important role: by the use of neutral and bright colors, I try to enhance the contrast among the pieces. “
Heerwegh teaches ceramics at the Academy of Kortrijk and wants to extend his own glass work. He also works for several designers.
In future, he plans together with other colleagues to start a public glass studio (Ghent Glass) in Ghent (gentglas.com or https://www.facebook.com/GentGlasVZW).

Merlijn van der Hoeven
Merlijn van der Hoeven (°1985) was trained as a Docent in Art and Design at the Arts Academy of Amsterdam, The Netherlands before she started her education at the Sint- Lucas Institute, Ghent.
In her work, she combines glass and porcelain. The forms she produces are developed by experimentation in which form and matter are central. The white color and the transparency are repeating themes in her work. She strives to master the crafts and the purity to express and realize her ideas perfectly, which are inspired by nature.

“ I work with glass and porcelain. These two materials are unified by fire and technique and skills are essential to obtain a perfect result. My fascination of glass is the result of a holiday in Sweden as a 6-year old, where I visited a glass factory and was given the opportunity to blow a glass vessel. Some years ago I did a workshop of lampworking and from that moment glass became my favorite material. I blow at the lamp but also at the oven with a pipe. Lampworking enables me to make very precise pieces. For my graduation, I got my inspiration in the movement of water and photographic imaging of drops falling on the ground. My works “Splashes” are a translation of this study. In addition, I am interested in the sound of glass and developed an installation of 35 vessels in different sizes and with different surfaces, which can be used by the audience to produce a melody. “

She will move back the Netherlands where she has her own studio. She wants to give workshops for different age groups and work on her own oeuvre or for other people.
The work of both graduates will be part of the graduation exhibition “LUCA campus Sint-Lucas Beeldende Kunst Gent” from June 27 -29 2014. They will participate in “Diafaan 6” in Ghent in July 2014.
