Volvo teams up with design duo Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe

The renowned design duo Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe have been commissioned to design a special collection this year, inspired by Volvo and the Volvo XC60. The project launches Volvo’s new design vision under the motto Design Moves Us, at the same time offering young designers a platform to develop their talent.
In the past six months, Volvo has presented three distinctive concept cars, setting out the company’s latest design vision.
Now, to maximise the focus on design, Volvo is teaming up with designers Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe (VEVDL) to create a compelling design statement. The designers will capture the unique spirit of Volvo and the XC60 in series of distinctive designs. The result, the Volvo Design Collection, will be presented at the end of 2014.
Scandinavian design ‘VEVDL’s designs have a great depth and multiple layers,’ says Arthur van Es, Marketing Director of Volvo Car Nederland. ‘That also goes for Volvo. As the only car marque with Scandinavian design in our DNA, we tell a unique design story. That makes us all the more curious about how VEVDL will incorporate this in their approach. This collaboration enables us to reveal our vision and philosophy. The plan is to further strengthen our connection to design in the future.’

Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe
VEVDL’s work features in museums and galleries across the globe. The team also initiates and designs exhibitions and spatial concepts for public buildings. As enthusiastic advocates of Dutch design, they often participate in debates and brainstorms, and are frequently asked to give lectures or teach. While VEVDL is involved in a broad range of areas, one thing characterises their work: there is always an extra layer – something to make you look twice. Their aim? To create an experience that engages, astounds and opens eyes as well as minds. Volvo Design Challenge Volvo constantly invests in the future – and in young designers. With the Design Challenge, Volvo invites these talents to create a design inspired by Volvo, the XC60, and the Design
 
The Volvo Design Challenge
Moves Us motto. A jury of industry professionals including VEVDL, will select the ten best entries. These will be presented at a leading design venue at the end of 2014, together with the Volvo Design Collection by VEVDL. The ten finalists will also receive professional feedback from the jury and a production budget of 2,500 euros to further develop their design. The winning design, to be announced during the exhibition, will receive an extra development prize of 5,000 euros.
The Volvo Design Challenge is open to students of design and art academies or Dutch universities. All disciplines are welcome. Designers who have graduated up to five years ago are also invited to take part.
