SELF UNSELF
Salone del Mobile 2014
8-13/4/2014

WHERE OBJECTS AND ISSUES MEET
Design Academy Eindhoven presents Self Unself
as a programme of objects and events
From 8 - 13 April, the DAE alumni will be presenting their graduation projects at the L.A.P. (Lambretto Art Project) building, in the Lambrate district, during Milan’s Salone del Mobile. In the context of the world’s biggest design fair, curators Thomas Widdershoven and Jan Konings present Self Unself including 17 of the most recent graduation projects. In Milan, Self Unself, which was launched as a theme in 2013 and has travelled the world since then, will take the shape of a lively programme consisting of films, performances and objects.

Self Unself Milan
What started as the theme of DAE’s 2013 Graduation Show has evolved into a series of exhibitions worldwide. After the Van Abbe Museum and the OCT-LOFT Creative Festival in Shenzhen (China), Milan will be the fourth Self Unself exhibition. At the Van Abbe Museum Self Unself was realised in a museum setting, in Shenzhen the exhibition consisted mainly of films. In Milan curators Thomas Widdershoven and Jan Konings will give the theme an additional layer. The presentation will depict the dichotomy between ‘objects’, for which Milan is a natural habitat, and ‘issues’ which the next generation of designers is placing on the agenda through films, performances and interventions.

Thomas Widdershoven: "Salone del Mobile is a multitude of things, but design is more. As a designer you can materialize your idea in porcelain, wood, textile. It can also take the shape of audiovisual means, technology, workshops or debates. These two worlds will converge in this presentation. It is to be a lively forum where lots of things will be happening, with or without objects."

Breakfast Talks
During Self Unself Milan DAE is organising four Breakfast Talks, from Wednesday to Saturday. These Breakfast Talks are a continuation of a tradition. Design Academy Eindhoven will be discussing a range of topics with design graduates, critics, journalists, alumni and tutors. In the first of these breakfast sessions Thomas Widdershoven will be shedding some light on the Self Unself theme with graduates Bora Hong and Dave Hakkens. Other guests at the breakfast table are designer Jurgen Bey, design critic Justin McGuirk and curator Rosana Orlandi. We will address, research and question Self Unself. Check the website and social media for the complete programme for Milan.

Partners
DAE is sharing its location, the Lambretta Art Project, with a number of partners: Het Nieuwe Instituut has commissioned designers Lernert & Sander to create an installation using the Rath & Doodeheefver wallpaper archives, and the Zuiderzee Museum and Textile Museum have joined forces to present the work of Glithero, currently on display at the Zuiderzee Museum. Gijs Bakker’s Chp… is presenting a line of jewellery.

The Dutch Consulate in Milan at L.A.P. on 7 April
