Sponsored by the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung

224 pages with 212 high gloss colour illustrations, 27 x 24.5 cm, cloth-bound cover | ISBN: 978-3-422-07224-4 | Price (incl. VAT, excl. shipping cost): EUR29.90

This book presents high-quality reproductions of over 80 verre églomisé landscape paintings – not folk art but works of high artistic and technical quality. This is the first attempt to place verre églomisé painting within 18th century landscape painting and highlight their hitherto unappreciated art historical significance. In part, the pictures discussed in this book were modelled on the works of famous landscape painters from the 16th to 18th century, for example Francesco Bassano, Nicolaes Berchem, Claude Joseph Vernet, François Boucher, Francesco Zuccarelli, Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner, and Jacopo Amiconi.

This very well made and written book is a pleasure to read. Striking are the photo pages with the reversed paintings, covered with high gloss lack giving a good impression of the works.

Prof.Dr. Wolfgang Brückner describes in his foreword how the paintings in the revered glass painting technique could become so popular and contribute to the popularization of art with their functional decoration in the representative style.

The book is in German only, but the text by Constanze Werner on the landscape in the Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th, 17th and18th century in Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and France is very pleasant to read, followed by the text by Wolfgang Steiner on Landschaft and Hinterglasmalerei in the 18th century explaining history, tradition, the light, motives, individual painters and the used glass. In the chapters Pastorale und Genre, Allegorien, Sakrale Landschaft and Veduten 87 spread pages with text and one full page colour photo give the best possible inside of the works as this book is the catalogue to the exposition in the Oberammergau Museum earlier this year from 27 July to 6 October.

I can recommend this book to all interested in the history of painting, the reversed glass painting technique and lovers of excellent books.
