Exploring the History, Art and Craft of Gilding
15/9-10/1
1

This exhibition of works by members of the Society of Gilders features fine art and decorative objects with gold and metal leaf reflecting the Monmouth Museum’s 50th Anniversary Circle of Gold theme. Gilding is the application of thin sheets of beaten metal (usually gold) to a solid surface as a means of surface decoration. Artists also use gilding techniques in the creation of fine art including paintings, illuminated manuscripts and verre eglomise, or reverse gilding and painting on glass. The Society of Gilders is an international non-profit educational organization devoted to the art and craft of gilding. Its mission is to preserve traditional gilding skills and techniques and to promote the highest standards in the practice of gilding. The organization is a valuable resource for technical help for gilders, restorers, conservators, craftsmen, and all those interested in the gilding arts. Exhibition curators are Naomi Geller Lipsky, a Board member of the Society of Gilders, and Daniel J. Fenski II, Monmouth Museum Vice-Chairman, owner of Windsor Gallery in Colts Neck, New Jersey, and a member of the Society of Gilders.
