Art meets science, Conversations
What is the role of colour in scientific microbiological imagery, and how does this affect our understanding of these phenomena? Luke Jerram, artist and Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the University of the West of England, discusses his acclaimed transparent and colourless glassworks, exhibited in the Synthesis exhibition, which explore the use of artificial colouring in scientific images. Photographs of Jerram’s artworks, designed in consultation with virologists, are used widely in medical journals, text books and media stories and are seen as useful representations of virology within the scientific community.
