Visible from miles away, this will be the largest single-image stained and fused glass window in the world, standing 37-feet-tall and 93-feet-wide (3,404 square feet), and will include 5,000 to 6,000 individual pieces of hand-painted, fused, etched and glazed glass in 161 5 ft x 4 ft panels. This unique multi-million dollar project is being created from a cutting-edge glass fusing technique, which marks the first time in 1000 years that there has been a significant change in the medium of stained glass on such a scale. The massive window is for the new 3,500-seat sanctuary of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Leawood, in Kansas City, KS, a very progressive church with a diverse congregation, and the largest in the United States.

William Lees Judson, noted artist and founding dean of the University of Southern California Fine Arts School, started the studio in 1897. Today, his great-great-grandson David Judson heads the studio. This commission is designed by Judson Studios’ lead artist Tim Carey, who has worked with Judson for over a decade, creating some of the studio’s finest designs. Consulting and providing technical and artistic expertise on the project is glass artist Narcissus Quagliata, whose highly-acclaimed glass artwork is in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian, and de Young, and displayed in public spaces such as the “Dome of Light” in Taiwan and the “Last Basilica of Michelangelo” in Rome, as well as private collections around the world.

Highlights of the window art, which depicts the biblical story from Genesis through Revelation, also include the Cosmos, the Tree of Knowledge, the Great Pyramid of Giza, a Jesus of all colors, as well as non-denominational subjects and humanitarian and Civil Rights icons including Billy Graham, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Emmett Till, Martin Luther King Jr., Mamie Till Mobley, Mother Teresa, Pope John XXIII, and Rosa Parks.

The window will be fully unveiled in April at its home in Kansas City, Kansas.

JUDSON STUDIOS was established in 1897 in Los Angeles and is the oldest family-run stained glass studio in America, still proudly offering an exquisite, handcrafted product made by local artisans. Our studio was established by William Lees Judson and his three sons. Judson was on the forefront of the Arroyo Guild of Craftsmen, a group of artists, sculptors and architects who fueled Southern California’s Arts and Crafts Movement. He also founded the original USC School of the Arts (formerly Los Angeles College of Fine Arts) at his home (the present location of Judson Studios). In our new 7,000 square feet state-of-the-art Judson Concepts fused glass studio and gallery,  just a few blocks away from our original stained glass studio, we create works that are a new amalgamation of glass art and architecture.

Our notable work includes the fabrication of several of Frank Lloyd Wright and Rudolph Schindler’s seminal projects in Los Angeles. Today, we challenge the limits of the medium we love, in unique projects and collaborations with renowned fine artists and designers, including Sage Vaughn, El Mac, Ruth Weisberg, Kelly Wearstler and Commune, and hotels including The Ace, The Standard, and The Normandie.

Judson Studios is under the direction of of David Judson, the fifth generation. Judson Studios and Judson Concepts projects are not limited by form or method; in fact, the only “rule” is a promise to push boundaries. In our collaborations and commissions we close the conceptual gap between art and craft, and expand the perspectives of both viewer and creator.
