THE PLACE
THE COMMUNAUTE DE COMMUNES CARMAUSIN?SEGALA AND ITS AREA :
The area of Carmausin?Ségala is located northeast of the Tarn department. It is 15 minutes from the agglomeration of Albi (Tarn prefecture), 45 min from Rodez (Aveyron prefecture), and 60 minutes from the regional capital Toulouse (A68).

WHY THE BIENNALE
This event is part of a wider project to enhance the territory of Carmaux through its glass identity, from the 18th to mid?20th century (see below). The Museum / Centre of Art Glass, currently housed in the former Royal Glass factory of the Marquis de Solages, is the cornerstone of the project and the basis of a program (new scenography of the museum, thematic exhibitions, residence of young professionals, demonstrations and introduction to the glass arts, etc.) aiming at making Carmaux and its region a must for glass business in the Southwest.

THE GLASS TRADITION IN THE AREA
Beyond the area, the Tarn department has, since the 16th century, a long tradition of glass, through its forest glassworks Grésigne
and Black Mountain.
In 1754, the Chevalier de Solages creates a Royal Glass former in Carmaux using coal the coal extracted from its mines. For the manufacture of black glass bottles, he uses highly qualified glassblowers of Champagne and Grésigne. The glass factory will continue to rise throughout the 19th, reaching 800 employees in 1882. These workers are a privileged working glass corporation by its higher wages. They are, in fact, the best paid in France.
From 1884, mechanization and new heating methods will allow the emergence of an industrial type of glassware employing less skilled labor. In 1895, a major strike to the factory of Sainte Clotilde decided to create a cooperative. This project, supported by Jean Jaurès, will be launched in 1896 with the creation of the Glassworkers’ cooperative in Albi (Verrerie Ouvrière d’Albi). The Carmaux factory, listed among the top glass to the coal France, will close its doors in 1931.
