Flame working – using the flame torch to shape, blow and join glass.
Drawing on concepts, ideas and designs from the beautiful local environment; this skills based class will explore the possibilities and potential of flame worked Borosilicate glass in contemporary art.

Using clear borosilicate glass (PYREX), solid glass rods will be transformed in to sculptural components; glass tube will be blown and connected in the flame to form larger scale assemblies.

Through a combination of demonstrations and free practice time, starting from basics we will build a vocabulary of flame working skills that will form a solid grounding to move forward using flame working as an art form.
Zoe will also deliver presentations on her own practice as a contemporary flame worker, the history of flame working and setting up a studio.

Winner of the prestigious Pearson prize in 2008, Zoe has produced commissions, exhibited widely and is visiting lecturer in flame work at the University of Sunderland and the National Glass Centre. Her work plays on the scientific associations of the material and flame techniques, creating a dialogue with aspects of human behavior and our emotional responses.
