As part of the ALEX design exchange refurbishment and renovation, the University has commissioned the glass team to produce an exciting new glasswork for the tower of the building, as a ‘Beacon of Glass’.

Located in the building’s four-sided square tower, the glass is designed to serve as a beacon, a metaphorical ‘crown’ for the building to represent both its history and resurrection; a visual statement of continuity and change.

The tower crowns a place of learning, artistry and innovation in a building that has been at the heart of education in Swansea since its inception. Visible from all round the city, the double height tower room houses a meeting space that all users of the building can enjoy.  The colourful glass beacon will be a shining example, literally, of the rich tradition and ongoing excellence in stained and architectural glass training in Swansea and of education as a whole within the University of Wales Trinity St David.
Visible both day and night it symbolises hope, inspiration and the accessibility of education for all.

An important element of the design is the past, present and future of glass at Swansea and we would like you all to be part of that living history. As part of this design concept we are inviting you to design a simple symbol that represents you, to be included within the design. Each symbol may be waterjet cut (positive or negative shape) or sandblasted within the design (your image will be interpreted to suit the requirements of the technique used).

If you are interested in submitting a symbol to be included, we will require a simple, black and white, line drawing (no larger that A4). Your line drawing can be emailed, posted or delivered directly to ALEX reception and can be a hard copy, scan, photo or digital file (preferred format Adobe Illustrator).

Your symbol must be clearly labelled with your name and contact details and a brief outline of your connection to Swansea Glass, e.g. staff, student, date attended etc.

Please send your line drawing via email
