A little bit of history
Back in 1969, the Ceramic Work Centre was founded in Heusden. In 1989 the institute moved to ’s-Hertogenbosch and added the word ‘European’ to its name. European, because just as Europe the centre has no internal hierarchy; European, because all the time, almost effortlessly, limits are exceeded and European, because it derives from the experimental modernist heritage of Western European art. In 2010, ‘Sundaymorning’ was added to the name, as an ironic commentary on the 24-hour economy and after the song by The Velvet Underground. In 2015 we move again: now to Oisterwijk, one of the most beautiful towns of the Netherlands, to a former leather factory. Here we have the space to develop all sorts of new activities.
Why come to Oisterwijk?
Talking to Susanne Hangaard, a current artist-in-residence
Susanne studied Ceramic design at the Danish Design School (KADK) in Copenhagen but she never felt like a designer and discovered she was actually a visual artist! She had a preference for the odd and unlikely. Trough school she learned about artist-in-residencies, but why did she come to Sundaymorning@ekwc? Susanne says: ‘Well, actually the ceramic arts community in Denmark is fairly small and eventually a friend said: "Forget Denmark!" and I listened.’ She hopes to grow her work to an more abstract level and experiment along with the guidance of Sundaymorning@ekwc.
Building through history
Talking to Anies Taihuttu, a carpenter in Oisterwijk
Anies worked on the former building site in 's-Hertogenbosch 25 years ago and is now working at the new location in Oisterwijk. He remembers the smell of coffee beans that dwelled trough the halls of the building in 's-Hertogenbosch when he arrived for the renovation. But in Oisterwijk the native pigeons family plays an interesting role during the renovation process and the builders refer to them as ‘Roekoe a.k.a Marijke Helwegen'. Anies is learning bit by bit what Sundaymorning@ekwc entails.‘With everyone being everywhere it feels like I’m renovating a home instead of an institute.' Anies loves to work in renovation: ’You make people feel at ease with what you do’.
