SPACES OF SILENCE - WINNIE TESCHMACHER

Frits de Coninck

As minimalistic and at the same time monumental as the works of Winnnie Teschmacher are, is this well-made book.
With the best photos and great text by Frits de Coninck the book breathes glass, light and space.

The text explains in small chapters the principle ‘less is more’ as in Sculpture that becomes Light and Space: “How simple a sculpture can appear to be. As though it took no effort whatsoever to let it take shape. As though it had never been conceived and produced and had always existed, its nonexistence thus being inconceivable.”

The works of Teschmacher are even more than less as each sculpture found its own essence individually. Where most authors need pages with texts, here the well explaining, condensed text on concept, perception, space, colour and light, but also on exploited content words as technique, craft, autonomous, glass, shape and sculpture bring things back to the basic.

In From Matter to Mind one can read: “… from Winnie Teschmacher's point of view, looking means moving, in terms of time and space. Looking means observing a piece of sculpture from every angle; looking means taking time. And the form in which the sculpture manifests itself is an essential means for achieving this. The meticulously designed form leads the viewer to an active observation that brings the sculpture in touch with the surroundings and time. Once the sculpture achieves this, it has broken free of its own material and form. ”

I love Teschmacher’s work and I love this book and I am sure you will too!
